A pedestrian was fatally struck by a motorist Sunday night in a possible hit-and-run incident at Sierra Highway at Sand Canyon Road in Canyon Country, the California Highway Patrol said.

The victim, a Canyon Country man in his 60s, was walking across Sierra Highway about 7:45 p.m. when he was struck by the southbound car, CHP Officer Larry Wilson said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver tried to swerve but was unable to avoid him and struck him with the right side of his car,” Wilson said.

The driver, also a Canyon Country man, stopped briefly, then drove home where he told his family about the accident.

The driver, whose name was not released, then returned to the scene and was being held for questioning by officers, Wilson said.

It was unclear if the driver would be arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, Wilson said.
