Fullerton Man Dies in Freeway Crash

A 38-year-old Fullerton truck driver was killed Monday during a chain-reaction accident involving five vehicles on the Long Beach Freeway, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, Robert Harvey, was northbound just north of the Artesia Freeway interchange at 11:55 a.m. when something fell out of the bed of a truck, causing the freeway traffic to stop abruptly, Officer Phil Jernigan said. A small car, a van, a truck and one big rig managed to stop, but Harvey’s brakes locked, and he slammed into them, Jernigan said.

Harvey was wearing a seat belt but was crushed by the impact, Jernigan said.

Four other drivers suffered minor injuries.

Four of the five northbound lanes of the Long Beach Freeway were closed for four hours while drywall that had spilled from the big-rig truck was cleaned up, Jernigan said.
