A year ago at the Lipton Championships, Michael Chang won the final match. This year, he lost his first match.

The defending champion was eliminated Monday at Key Biscayne, Fla., by unseeded South African Marcos Ondruska, 7-5, 6-1.

Jennifer Capriati, next up on the stadium court, lost a third-round match to Judith Wiesner of Austria, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Ondruska, ranked 48th, and Wiesner, ranked 25th, applied plenty of pressure with consistently deep groundstrokes.

“When you’re ranked No. 7 in the world, you don’t want to lose like this,” Chang said. “The No. 7 player in the world is not supposed to lose early.”

Chang could fall out of the top 10 next week. His second-round departure was the earliest by a defending men’s champion in Lipton’s nine-year history.

Top-seeded Jim Courier and Steffi Graf won easily. Courier beat Byron Black of Zimbabwe in the second round. Graf routed Nicole Arendt of Gainesville, Fla., in the third round.

Courier, coming off his third title of the year earlier this month at Indian Wells, Calif., improved his record in 1993 to 18-1. No. 11-seeded Wayne Ferreira lost to qualifier Kenny Thorne, a former Georgia Tech player, 6-1, 6-1.

Jason Stoltenberg will team with Wally Masur and doubles players Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde on the four-man Australian squad that will face the defending champion United States in the first round at Kooyong from March 26-28. The U.S. team is made up of David Wheaton and Brad Gilbert and doubles players Jim Grabb and Richey Reneberg.
