A 13-year-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver who was caught and held by onlookers until police arrived, police said.

The fleeing driver was forcibly restrained by witnesses who chased him four blocks while one of the onlookers telephoned police, who arrested the suspect, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust said.

The names of the onlookers who chased down the suspect were not available late Sunday.

“Citizens followed the truck to 15th and Dresser streets,” Faust said. “They detained the truck and driver until police arrived.”

Arturo Gonzalez Moreno, 26, of Santa Ana, was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Faust said.

The name of the boy, who was in intensive care at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, was not immediately available, Faust said. The boy suffered head, leg and hip injuries.

The incident occurred at 4:32 p.m. while the boy was crossing in an unmarked intersection at 1500 N. Main Street, Faust said.

He was struck by a northbound pickup truck traveling 40 to 45 miles per hour.
