Countywide : Proposal Would End 5-Cent Transfer Fee

Share

Orange County Transportation Authority board member Dana W. Reed on Monday proposed doing away with the agency’s nickel bus transfer fee.

Citing another OCTA decision on Monday--to give rail commuters free transfers to the Red Line subway in Los Angeles--Reed argued that it is only fair to end the nickel fee for transfers between OCTA bus routes.

There are about a million transfers a month on the OCTA bus system. OCTA officials said the fees currently generate about $600,000 a year.

“People transfer only because we don’t have a bus that goes where they need it to go,” said Reed, a Costa Mesa lawyer. “I just want to make it easier for people to use the bus.”

The OCTA staff will research Reed’s proposal and report to the agency board of directors in a few weeks.

Also on Monday, Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder called for stricter controls on travel by OCTA board members, citing recent alleged abuses by board members of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Wieder complained that OCTA, while controlling most staff travel, has no written policy for board members themselves.
