Share

Thousand Oaks leaders will unveil a new disaster-response training program at an introductory meeting April 14 at 7 p.m. for citizens interested in learning survival tips, first aid and neighborhood mobilization tactics.

Participants will learn how to respond to emergencies, from fighting fires to organizing search teams. The free workshops, to be outlined in the introductory meeting, will include 20 hours of training.

Experts from the Red Cross, the Ventura County Fire District and the Ventura County office of emergency services will lead the sessions, which will include disaster psychology, damage assessment and first aid.

“Our goal is to encourage both individual and neighborhood preparedness,” City Manager Grant Brimhall said.

If residents are equipped to respond to a crisis, Brimhall added, “the city’s resources can be prioritized to deal with the most critical issues immediately.”

After completing the program, residents will be able to swiftly care for themselves and their property, then to help the community if necessary, he said.

The introductory meeting will be held in council chambers at City Hall. For more information, call the city manager’s office at 496-8601.
