NHL ROUNDUP : Gartner’s Two Goals Beat Ottawa

Mike Gartner scored two goals and the New York Rangers held off the Ottawa Senators, 5-4, Monday at Ottawa to move into third place in the Patrick Division.

Gartner, with his 41st and 42nd goals of the season, helped lift the Rangers one point ahead of the New Jersey Devils. Only five points separate second and fifth place in the division.

The Senators outshot New York, 30-21, and had the better of the scoring chances throughout, twice rallying from two-goal deficits.

It was the Rangers’ first game since All-Star defenseman Brian Leetch broke his ankle when he slipped on ice while getting out of a cab Friday night.

Buffalo 8, Montreal 3--Randy Wood, Ken Sutton and Yuri Khmylev scored second-period goals at Montreal, and Canadien All-Star goalie Patrick Roy was pulled from the game after surrendering five goals in less than two periods.

The fourth-place Sabres, who have lost only one of their last seven games, beat the Adams Division-leading Canadiens for only the second time in six meetings this season.

Boston 5, Hartford 4--Glen Wesley, Peter Douris and Dave Reid scored goals in a span of 1:39 in the third period at Boston to rally the Bruins past Hartford.

The victory, the eighth in 10 games for the Bruins, moved them within a point of idle Quebec in the fight for second place in the Adams Division.

Bruin goalie Andy Moog, who won his eighth consecutive game, faced only 23 shots.

St. Louis 3, Vancouver 1--The Blues were outshot, 37-15, but scored once in each period and got 36 saves from Curtis Joseph to beat the Canucks at Vancouver.

Kevin Miller, Craig Janney and Basil McRae each scored for St. Louis.
