Teemu Selanne set an NHL rookie points record Tuesday night, but the Toronto Maple Leafs spoiled the occasion at Winnipeg by defeating the Jets, 5-4.

Dave McLlwain scored at 7:17 of the third period to lift the Maple Leafs to their third victory in a row and fifth in six games.

Selanne had two goals and an assist to give him 111 points, surpassing the 109 by Peter Stastny with the Quebec Nordiques during the 1980-81 season.

Selanne, 22, tied the record with his 66th goal on a power play at 7:46 of the second period, knocking in a rebound from slightly off the crease.

He broke Stastny’s mark 38 seconds later with an assist on a goal by Alexei Zhamnov.

The 14,900 fans gave Selanne a minute-long ovation after his goal and stood and cheered for more than two minutes after he broke the record.

Pittsburgh 7, San Jose 2--Mario Lemieux had five points and Kevin Stevens four at Pittsburgh as the Penguins won their seventh in a row.

Lemieux extended his scoring streak to seven games with two goals and three assists. Stevens had two goals and two assists as the Penguins matched the season-best winning streak they had from last Oct. 13-27. They are one short of the NHL season high, held by three teams.

Pittsburgh is one point away from clinching a playoff spot and two points away from the first 100-point season in the franchise’s 26 years.

Washington 5, Quebec 1--Defenseman Kevin Hatcher scored his 30th goal of the season, becoming only the sixth NHL defenseman to reach that mark, as the Capitals won at Landover, Md.

Peter Bondra had two goals and an assist for the Capitals, winners of three in a row, who increased their second-place margin in the Patrick Division to three points.

Quebec, which has the NHL’s best road record, had lost only once in its last 11 road games.

Detroit 3, N.Y. Islanders 2--At Detroit, the Red Wings, keyed by Steve Yzerman’s 53rd goal, won for the eighth time in 10 games and moved into first place in the Norris Division, one point ahead of Chicago.

New Jersey 9, Tampa Bay 3--Stephane Richer and Viacheslav Fetisov scored late in the first period at East Rutherford, N.J., to break the game open and the Devils handed the Lightning its eighth consecutive loss.

Rookie Ben Hankinson added his first two NHL goals as the Devils moved into third place in the Patrick Division, a point ahead of the New York Rangers.
