Lowe Signs Three-Year Contract to Remain as Timberwolves’ Coach
Sidney Lowe, Minnesota’s interim coach since Jan. 11, signed a three-year contract with the Timberwolves on Wednesday.
The deal makes Lowe, 33, the second-youngest coach in NBA history and the Timberwolves’ third coach in four years.
Lowe, who took over after Jimmy Rodgers was fired, was 9-25 as interim coach.
“Sometimes they say the hardest part is keeping the job,” Lowe said. “The easiest part is getting it.”
Lowe is off to the best start of any Minnesota coach through 34 games. However, the team has the second-worst record in the NBA at 15-50.
Lowe got General Manager Jack McCloskey’s attention--and the team’s--when he put his fist through a blackboard after a game against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City this month. McCloskey said it reminded him of the time he broke a blackboard as an assistant at Princeton.
The only man younger than Lowe to coach in the NBA was Dave DeBusschere, who was 24 as a player-coach with the Detroit Pistons in 1964.
