BURBANK : L.A. Motion Cites Airport Challenge

The Los Angeles city attorney was asked Friday to explore the possibility of filing a legal challenge against plans to build a new $200-million terminal at Burbank Airport.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority voted unanimously Monday to build a 670,000-square-foot terminal with 12,300 parking spaces. The new terminal would be nearly four times the size of the existing facility.

On Friday, Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs introduced a motion arguing that the environmental review of the project was inadequate and asking City Atty. James Hahn to look into the possibility of challenging the airport authority’s decision.

The capacity of the terminal and its environmental impacts are unknown, Wachs contended.

Wachs, now a candidate for mayor, has carried on a running battle for years to reduce the noise and traffic impacts of Burbank Airport on Los Angeles residents.

In the past year, a Wachs-led attempt to apply Los Angeles zoning rules to a Burbank runway expansion project was killed by the courts.
