Share

The Super Cities Walk for Multiple Sclerosis will be held Sunday in Newport Beach, Brea and Huntington Beach.

The 15-kilometer walk will take place in the three cities at the same time. At 8:30 a.m., walkers will take off from Newport Dunes in Newport Beach, Craig Park in Brea and Huntington State Beach in Huntington Beach in an effort to raise money for the Orange County chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

About 2,500 people in Orange County have multiple sclerosis, and more than 175 are diagnosed with MS each year here, according to the local chapter.

The event this year is dedicated to the approximately 750,000 people nationwide who have multiple sclerosis, including actress Annette Funicello, the society’s national ambassador.

The disease strikes the central nervous system and destroys nerve fibers, interrupting nerve impulses from the brain. Effects range from blurred vision and numbness to complete paralysis. No cure has been discovered.

The society works toward finding a cure through research. The Orange County chapter, based in Irvine, provides support group therapy and other programs for people with the disease.

Walkers will be encouraged to collect at least $50 in sponsorship pledges. Money raised will benefit research, local programs and services.

To register, call (714) 752-1680 or show up at one of the three sites at 7:30 a.m.
