Senna Wins in Brazil; Andretti Crash Provokes Complaint From Opponent
Ayrton Senna won the Brazilian Grand Prix on a Sunday during which Formula One rookie and Indy car champion Michael Andretti crashed before the first curve.
Senna, in a McLaren-Ford, took the lead for good on the 42nd lap after a sudden rainstorm, during which Alain Prost skidded into a stalled car and slid off the track. Senna finished the 71 laps around the 2.687-mile Interlagos track in 1 hour 51 minutes 15.485 seconds, for an average speed of 102.900 m.p.h.
Andretti’s McLaren-Ford swerved into the Ferrari of Gerhard Berger, knocking both cars out. Andretti was taken to a hospital with back pains and released. The Ferrari team said it would file a complaint against Andretti.
