Pasadena : Cities to Share Pipeline Cost

The Glendale and Pasadena city councils agreed Tuesday to share the costs of building a pipeline to carry treated sewage water from Glendale’s reclamation plant for use in irrigating parks, schools, golf courses and other public places in the two cities.

Donald R. Froelich, Glendale water services administrator, said the agreement will result in savings to both cities, not only by sharing costs of building a pipeline but also by eventually allowing the use of reclaimed water that would otherwise be dumped into the ocean, which will save an equal amount of fresh tap water for household use.

Glendale is building the pipeline along Verdugo Road and Canada Boulevard from Colorado St. north to the Oakmont Country Club. The line could then be extended to Pasadena, with construction beginning as early as 1996, officials said.

The agreement is expected to save both cities at least $2.3 million over the next 25 years compared to the cost of water reclamation pipelines built independently, Froelich said.
