LEARY LANG: Grammy-winner k.d. lang is the latest in a growing list of pop stars who are unhappy about being the subject of a biography, and she’s asked friends not to cooperate in the St. Martin’s Press project. Victoria Starr, a journalist who hosts a weekly show of music by women on New York’s Pacifica radio station, WBAI-FM, is discouraged by the rebuff but will continue to work on the book, scheduled for an early 1994 publication.

“It’s going to be a very positive book and I can’t figure out why they’re concerned,” says Starr. “I won’t be writing about her love life and any scandal. I’m looking at how this incredible artist has managed to do what she’s done and stick to her principles.”

But lang’s manager, Larry Wanagas, says that it’s not potential scandal that worries him.

“There’s not much that isn’t public about her,” he says of lang, who has spoken openly about being gay. “But she is concerned that it’s not appropriate to have a book written about her right now. She feels she still has a long way to go in her career and much left to accomplish and it’s premature to tell the story of her life.”
