The trial of the owners of a residential hotel accused of violating health, fire, building and safety codes has been delayed until April 12 in Los Angeles Municipal Court.

James V. and Gwendolyn G. Carone of Mission Viejo each are charged in a 28-count complaint in relation to conditions at the Hollenbeck View Hotel, 2033 E. 4th St. They pleaded not guilty in January.

Their attorney, Victor M. Salerno, said the couple has brought the building up to code, spending $50,000 in repairs on the 24-unit building since they bought it in August.

“I remain optimistic that the city would gladly drop charges since Mr. Carone has put in so much effort and money,” Salerno said.

The city Slum Housing Task Force inspected the building in November and found cockroach infestation, broken windows, leaky plumbing, exposed electrical wiring, a damaged fire hose and said a smoke detector and heater were missing.

If convicted, the Carones could be sentenced to up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine on each count, Wilkinson said.
