Moral Code of ‘Spur Posse’
I am disappointed at the reaction of the community to the events at Lakewood High. The parents, coaches, teachers and administrators should in some way be held accountable for allowing an atmosphere to exist where these students felt they could continue with activities and attitudes that are so morally contemptible. The continued quotes from parents and friends of the young men dismissing the seriousness of their sexual exploits are inexcusable.
Referring to the questionable integrity of the young women involved is falling into the old “she deserved what she got” syndrome. Has it occurred to anyone that every young woman on that campus should receive in-depth counseling in order to establish feelings of self-worth and control of their environment? I’m sure that Lakewood is just the tip of the iceberg.
The attitude of the Spur Posse and their friends and families is symptomatic of the ills in our nation’s character. What is needed is a curriculum to develop moral character. As a nation we need to insist on programs and systems that are based on valuing our children and we must raise our children to value others.
