American Cuts Large Number of San Jose Flights: American Airlines will eliminate a substantial number of flights from its San Jose hub this summer, while low-fare Southwest Airlines will start flying into the city. American, which has been withdrawing from unprofitable routes, will cut nearly 50 daily jet and turboprop flights from San Jose beginning in July, as well as eliminate all service to Burbank. The move will likely result in layoffs, the company said. Meanwhile, Southwest will begin flying from San Jose to Burbank and Las Vegas beginning June 1.
