A 16-year-old Asian gang member is being sought in the murder of a Monterey Park woman shot to death Monday in a carjacking gone awry.
Coung Minh Hoang, a Vietnamese youth who belongs to the Wah Ching gang, was linked by witnesses to the killing of Kathy May Lee at a fabric store on Valley Boulevard in Alhambra, Sheriff’s Lt. William Sieber said. Lee’s assailant used a revolver to shoot her in the chest as she pulled into the store parking lot.
Lee, 27, had put the car in reverse to realign it in the parking space. When she was shot, her foot fell on the gas pedal and the car sped out of the gunman’s reach. Sheriff’s investigators believe that the assailant did not see Lee’s mother, who was a passenger and escaped injury.
Hoang, described as 5-foot-9, 160 pounds with brown hair and eyes, is believed to be in the San Gabriel Valley, Sieber said. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (213) 974-4341.
