BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Worrell on 15-Day Disabled List

Dodger reliever Todd Worrell was put on the 15-day disabled list Thursday night with a strained forearm, and Pedro Martinez was recalled from triple-A Albuquerque.

Worrell’s test results showed that he had not suffered a torn muscle or further damage to his surgically repaired elbow Wednesday night against the Florida Marlins.

Frank Jobe, the Dodgers’ orthopedist, met Worrell at the Atlanta airport Thursday morning, examined him, then accompanied him to a local hospital for a magnetic resonance imaging exam and X-rays. Jobe said that Worrell has a sprained right forearm and in addition could have had an adhesion pull.

“How bad it is, I don’t think anybody knows,” Worrell said. “Tests can’t show it. The healing process will tell. But this is not something that will sacrifice the season for me or for the team.”

“How much should I worry?” Manager Tom Lasorda asked. “That depends on how long I have to worry.”

Lasorda said he will move Jim Gott to the closer’s role.

“Things are different than they were last season,” Gott said. “Nobody assumed the stopper role last year and it was like playing ‘Wheel of Fortune’--whatever name came up pitched. But this year is different. We have a stopper. Everybody knows their role. We will be back to normal in a couple of weeks.”

The Dodgers have invited the family of former Dodger Tim Crews to the home opener at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday. Fred Claire, executive vice president, indicated there are no plans for a ceremony on Crews’ behalf. . . . The security at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium was tight Thursday night because Vice President Al Gore attended. Gore, visiting with Lasorda in the clubhouse, was told that Kevin Gross was assessed a clubhouse fine because the security prevented him from arriving on time. “He told me Kevin shouldn’t have to pay the fine and I agreed--I told him he should pay it,” Lasorda said.
