Metrolink officials Friday approved a new $1 fare for students traveling in groups of 20 or more.

“The idea is to help out school districts with budget constraints,” said Peter Hidalgo, spokesman for Metrolink.

In a meeting Friday, officials of the Southern California Regional Rail Authority approved the new student rate, applicable to groups of children in kindergarten through high school. The fare must be approved two weeks before the planned excursions.

With the fare, students accompanied by chaperons will be able to travel all Metrolink lines, running on more than 100 miles of track from Los Angeles to Moorpark, Santa Clarita and Claremont.
