United, American and Delta to Match Cuts by Northwest
Several major airlines said Monday that they would match the spring and summer fare cuts of up to 35% made by Northwest Airlines.
United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines said that effective immediately they are lowering ticket prices to meet Northwest’s cuts in markets where they compete with Northwest.
The new fares are already in United’s computer reservation system, said Joseph Hopkins, a spokesman for United’s parent company, UAL Corp. “We’ve already matched Northwest where we compete with them,” he said.
On Sunday, Northwest said it had slashed fares to most U.S. destinations by as much as 35% for trips completed by June 30.
News of the cuts triggered a selloff Monday in shares of the air carriers. UAL fell $3.875 to $141.875; Delta lost $1.125 to $56.75, and AMR Corp., the parent of American, dropped $2 to $66.625.
Northwest said tickets for domestic travel must be purchased by Friday and at least 14 days prior to departure.
