King Won’t Return to Raiders; Offer Is Said to Be Unacceptable

Share

Negotiations between Bill King, the Raiders’ radio announcer since 1966, and the team’s new radio rights holder, Nederlander Sports Marketing, have broken off and both sides said Monday that King will not be back.

King was offered a salary of $50,000 a year, which King and his agent, Hugh Lawrence, said was unacceptable. On Monday, Lawrence was told by Roger Blaemire, the president of Nederlander Sports Marketing, that there would be no otheroffers.

“We’re sorry to see it happen, but Bill King will not be back,” Blaemire said.

Lawrence called the $50,000 offer an “entry level” figure and said it was 47% of what King had made last year.

One possibility to replace King is commentator Rich Marotta, who would move over to play by play, with Jim Plunkett becoming the commentator.
