LONG BEACH : Cost of Proposed Tourist Harbor Put at $500 Million

It will cost $550 million to build a proposed tourist harbor, including an aquarium and a cruise ship terminal, on Long Beach’s downtown waterfront, a consultant told the Long Beach City Council on Tuesday.

Officials from Ehrenkrantz & Eckstut Architects said the city would have to pay $250 million to excavate and dredge a municipal park, among other things, to create the harbor. The remainder of the bill for the development, which would include an amusement park and a shopping and restaurant district, would be paid by private developers, the consultant said.

The City Council is scheduled to decide on July 20 whether to approve the proposal. By then, City Manager James C. Hankla is expected to present a proposal on how Long Beach could raise the $250 million. If completed, the development would create 3,575 jobs, the consultant said.
