Ducks Get Veteran Scout McNab to Join Staff After NHL Drafts

The Mighty Ducks have reached an agreement to hire New York Rangers scout Dave McNab, who will join the organization June 27 after completing his work on the NHL drafts with the Rangers, McNab said Monday.

McNab, a scout for the last 15 years with the Rangers, Hartford Whalers and Washington Capitals, said his title with the Ducks has not been determined, but that it could be something along the lines of player personnel director. However, he expects to remain based in Minneapolis, where he has scouted college and high school players for the Rangers.

The Rangers gave Ducks General Manager Jack Ferreira permission to interview McNab provided McNab would not begin working for the Anaheim team until after the expansion and entry drafts in June.

McNab knows Ferreira from Ferreira’s days as a Minneapolis-area scout for the Calgary Flames and as the Rangers’ director of player development.

McNab also has strong ties to Southern California.

“I lived in San Diego from sixth grade until I finished high school,” said McNab, whose father, Max McNab, was general manager of the old San Diego Gulls of the defunct Western professional league. “I’m probably the only person scouting in the NHL who grew up in Southern California.”

Ferreira’s staff includes assistant general manager Pierre Gauthier, formerly of the Quebec Nordiques, and scout Al Godfrey, formerly of the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.
