Jazz Veteran to Sizzle at Hot Springs

Next up in the periodic Sunday jazz series at Wheeler Hot Springs is a stalwart West Coast hero of the saxophone, Red Holloway. Holloway is one of those mainstream players who issues up effortless volleys of sax improvisation, with an infectious grin that tells much of the story.

Until he moved to Los Angeles in 1967, Chicago was Holloway’s hometown and it was there that he launched his reputation, playing with a variety of jazz greats, culminating with an attention-getting stint with organist “Brother” Jack McDuff.

Starting in the ‘60s and through the mid-70s, Holloway booked and played in L.A.’s legendary Parisian Room. In the late ‘70s, he struck up a musical partnership with saxophonist Sonny Stitt, who died in 1982. Since then, the affable Holloway has appeared in all-star packages and on his own.

At Wheeler’s, he’ll be joined by pianist Dwight Dickerson, bassist Richard Reid and drummer Paul Humphrey.
