GLENDALE : Seat Belt Violators Target of Crackdown
Buckle up or pay a $22 fine--it’s the law.
That’s the message police are now sending to Glendale motorists and passengers as part of the county’s Safety Belt Special Enforcement Week.
“Our motor officers and our patrol officers are going to be engaging in very active enforcement,” Glendale Police Lt. Ray Edey said. “The No. 1 goal is to save lives.”
The annual program started Sunday and is scheduled to end by Saturday. The main difference with the enforcement this year is that officers are applying the new seat belt law. Effective January of this year, it allows police to pull violators over.
More than 60 citations have been issued to motorists or passengers in Glendale, officials said Thursday.
The city has yet to reach a 100% compliance rate. Edey estimates that 80% of motorists and passengers use safety belts.
“There’s still a lot of people out there not wearing seat belts,” he said. “We want them to get into the habit of buckling up.”
