A 13-year-old Arleta boy was in critical condition Sunday after being shot in the head in Mission Hills, Los Angeles police said.

The youth, Jason Lozano, was on life support at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Lozano and Max Tapia, 16, were shot about 7 p.m. Saturday in an alley behind an apartment complex in the 10000 block of Sepulveda Boulevard, said Detective Marshall White.

Tapia was treated and released from Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills for a minor gunshot wound in his arm, White said.

Neither victim is believed to be in a gang, but White said he is not sure if their assailants were in a gang.

The two boys were walking in the alley when a car pulled up and one youth got out and yelled something at them, White said. The assailant then pulled out a handgun and opened fire at Lozano and Tapia, who tried to run away.

“He fired several shots. They were running and he shot them from behind,” White said.

Detectives said the suspect fled in a red 1985 or 1986 Toyota Corolla.
