KENTUCKY DERBY / UPDATE : Field Is Expected to Be Near Limit

Share

The Kentucky Derby field will be close to the 20-horse limit.

Probables include Prairie Bayou, Personal Hope, Union City, Storm Tower, Bull Inthe Heather, Wallenda, Sea Hero, El Bakan, Dixieland Heat, Tossofthecoin, Truth Of It All, Kissin Kris, Mi Cielo, Silver Of Silver, Rockamundo, Wild Gale, Ragtime Rebel, Ivory Frontier and the Allen Paulson-owned entry of Corby and Diazo.

Marked Tree might also run, which would give John Ed Anthony’s Loblolly Farm a second horse to go with Prairie Bayou. If more than 20 are entered, Churchill Downs will limit the field to the horses with the most earnings in graded stakes.

Other trainers besides Mark Hennig postponed workouts Monday, and Dixieland Heat’s seven-furlong workout was barely more than a gallop, so trainer Gerald Romero has scheduled a six-furlong workout for today.

Of the horses that did work, Prairie Bayou was timed in 1:01 for five furlongs; Union City, sharp since arriving from California, went six furlongs in 1:13 and Kissin Kris’ five-furlong time was 1:03 1/5.

Corby, seventh as the favorite in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 10, continued to work slowly at Churchill Downs. His time in the mud Sunday was 1:42 2/5 for a mile. “It was a useful mile,” trainer John Sadler said. “I don’t think he loved the muddy track.”
