Athlete of the Week--Cavetra Mitchell’s record time in the 100 meters at the Orange County Championships, which she set as a sophomore at Los Alamitos in 1991, is 12.18 seconds. Mission Viejo’s Sheri Bertell ran a wind-aided 11.98 in the championships in 1988.

Position: Sprinter

Class: Senior

Mitchell nearly pulled a triple Saturday at the Orange County Championships. She won the 100 and 200 meters and was leading in the 100 low hurdles before hitting the final three hurdles and stumbling to second place. Mitchell, the female sprinter of the meet, won the 100 in 12.39 seconds and the 200 in a wind-aided time of 24.89, the fastest in the county this season. Los Alamitos Coach Cary Brody said Mitchell would have posted a sub-15-second time in the hurdles if she had not hit the hurdles. “She was way out in front, but that’s part of the deal--you’ve got to get over them all without stumbling,” Brody said. The hurdles are a new event for Mitchell, who is relatively inexperienced for a senior because she was academically ineligible two of her four track seasons at Los Alamitos. As a sophomore in 1991, she set the Orange County Championships record, running 10.18 in the 100.

Other top performers:

Ocean View’s Christie Engesser won two events at the Orange County Championships, the 800 in 2:13.68 and the 1,500 in a meet-record time of 4:41.3.

Whittier Christian pitcher Debbie Goddu pitched two no-hitters in five inning games. She had eight strikeouts in a 12-0 victory over Capistrano Valley Christian and 10 in a 27-0 victory over Orange Lutheran.
