SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Boys & Girls Club Plans Fund Drive
- Share via
The new Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley is planning an effort to raise $75,000 to expand its services. Starting May 6, more than 200 volunteers will canvass residents of Capistrano Valley for donations.
At the same time, club officials will lead a business and corporate gift-giving campaign designed to raise another $50,000.
The club will use money from the campaigns to expand its teen center and eliminate the need for funding from the city.
In late March, the club joined the city and the Capistrano Unified School District to open a part-time center for youths ages 12 through 17.
The teen center is now open from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays under the supervision of director Tom Giambone and gang prevention specialist Derek Diaz. It is located in portable building No. 3 between the San Juan Public Library and Serra Continuation High School on El Camino Real.
The center now offers about 40 youths free after-school music, tutoring and athletic services, as well as the Enable program, which emphasizes education now and babies later.
Club officials hope to open the center five days a week, increase hours and admit children starting at age 7 in mid-June. At capacity, the center could someday serve up to 350 youths.
