SANTA ANA : Schools Offering $6 Bike Helmets

Share

Hoping to make riding to and from school safer, the Santa Ana Unified School District is offering 700 bike helmets for sale to elementary school students.

School district spokeswoman Diane Thomas said that the $20 helmets are being sold for $6 each, making them inexpensive enough for low-income families to purchase. Most of the cost of the helmets was paid by donations from the Orange County Trauma Society.

Thomas said that the program encourages students to wear helmets while bicycling and is also intended to make them feel that wearing safety gear is acceptable.

As part of the program, the Santa Ana Rotary Club has donated 100 additional helmets, which will be given as incentives at school assemblies on bicycle safety.

Students who wear their helmets will also receive free passes to a local amusement park, Thomas said.
