Maybe They Won It, Maybe They Didn’t

Last Tuesday at 5:49 p.m. on the Channel 2 news, Jim Hill said that the Dodgers had taken an early 4-0 lead over the Mets in New York (this was a game that started somewhere about 10:30 a.m.) and to turn to the 6 o’clock news (this really means about 6:25 for the sports) to see if they held on.

This is not a slam particularly at Hill, but a constant complaint about newscasters promoting a show coming up later and fooling a disgusted public by pretending to break in for a tremendous story that they will tell you about hours later. Stick around.

How about two editions of The Times, one in the evening hinting in the broadest of generalities what will be coming the next morning?
