Kyle Petty, who failed to qualify in the first round because of a broken transmission, led second-day qualifying at Talladega for the Winston 500.
Petty, the pole-winner in the season-opening Daytona 500, bounced back from Friday’s disappointment with a lap of 189.639 m.p.h., giving him the 21st starting position in the 41-car field.
