As a public service to mothers, we offer the following as a hint you can drop on your offspring regarding your special day Sunday:
Dear Children,
Monrovia just happens to be having its 11th Annual Mother’s Day Old Homes Tour.
Being awakened by cold coffee or tea slopped onto the chest might be a good aerobic workout, but it’s not the preferred option. Then there’s what you did to the kitchen last year. Do you really want the insurance deductible taken out of your allowances again?
Brunch and chocolates add pounds to the hips. Looking at lovely older homes, such as the Burr House celebrating, its 100th birthday, doesn’t.
Mother’s Day should be a family celebration. And what could be more family oriented than enjoying the homes of some of Monrovia’s first families? Homes like the Oaks, built in 1885 for Monrovia’s founder, William Newton Monroe, will be featured.
There will be eight residences on the self-guided tour, and docents will be in period costumes. We should plan on driving from home to home, but we can do it in any order we like.
There will be an arts and crafts fair at the Monrovia Historical Museum, formerly the municipal plunge building, and a restoration fair at the Pile House, an 1880s Victorian with elaborate ornamentation and the word “Idlewild” carved on the front gable.
You might like the display of vintage motor cars and antique bicycles. At the very least, it won’t hurt you to learn a little local history, now, will it?
No interior photography, smoking, food, beverages or spike heels are permitted, but these are the little sacrifices we all have to make.
Now, dear children, the houses will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Day-of-tour tickets cost $12 per adult, $10 for those 65 years and older, $6 for those between 13 and 17 years, and those under 12 are free. You can get tickets at the Anderson House Museum, 215 E. Lime Ave. You can also get tickets in advance by calling (818) 358-7822.
