SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : Judge Refuses Plea to Move Menendez Brothers’ Trial

A court order to the Sheriff’s Department to transport Erik and Lyle Menendez from the Central Jail to their Van Nuys trial alone in a van rather than in buses with other inmates may cost the financially strapped agency more than $60,000 in deputy overtime pay, according to a sheriff’s attorney.

But Superior Court Judge Stanley M. Weisberg has refused a plea by the attorney, James Owens, that he move the trial of the Menendez brothers, accused of killing their parents in 1989, downtown to minimize transportation costs.

Weisberg ordered the special transportation of the brothers after receiving an affidavit two weeks ago from Erik Menendez’s defense attorney, Leslie Abramson, saying that “a constant stream of harassing and threatening comments” had given Abramson’s client carsickness, nausea, dizziness and headaches.
