War Threat a Diversion, Perot Says

WASHINGTON — Ross Perot suggested that President Clinton might “get a little war going” in Bosnia to divert attention from broken promises at home. The White House denounced the remarks as “outrageous” and “ill-considered and intemperate.”
Clinton’s promises on everything from taxes to health reform “are just imploding,” making it a “good time to distract the American people,” Perot said in an interview with U.S. News & World Report, which was released Friday. The White House reacted a few hours later.
“The very idea that President Clinton or any other American President would make a decision involving the lives of Americans in uniform for political reasons is outrageous,” said White House Communications Director George Stephanopoulos after reviewing a transcript of Perot’s remarks.
The interview with U.S. News & World Report coincided with a poll by the magazine showing the former presidential candidate maintaining remarkable popularity with the American public.
