Winning Race Less Important as Off-Road Series Resumes Tonight

Rod Millen was all smiles when reminded that he has yet to win a main event in four stops of the Mickey Thompson Stadium off-road racing series this year.

That is because the Grand National truck driver is atop the drivers’ standings heading into tonight’s racing beginning at 6:30 at the Rose Bowl.

Millen won the drivers’ title last season. But this year the point system has been changed.

Drivers get points for passing opponents and for where they finish in both heats and the main event. So a driver who does well in the two heats can get points even if his truck is knocked out of the main event.

“To do well in the heats and then win in the main event, one would take a bit of a step in front of the others,” Millen said.

Millen and teammate Ivan Stewart have given Toyota the top spot in the manufacturers’ standings. Five other classes will also compete: Sport Utility Vehicles, Super 1600, 4-wheel ATVs, SuperLites and UltraCross motorcycles.
