In response to “The Gospel According to Peter,” by Diane Haithman (April 18):

While Peter Sellars is busy writing off established museums and performing arts complexes as “irritating pieces of real estate,” I find it curious to note that his own personal track record of work includes performances of “Nixon in China” at the Los Angeles Music Center.

Has this establishment now become “irritating” because the Los Angeles Music Center Opera turned down his “Death of Klinghoffer” project this year?

In addition, Sellars promotes the oft-heard idea of late of bringing arts directly to communities. I understand the point he is making, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is in a community, for example. Are we moving toward a place where any large-scale, established venue is an undesirable, politically incorrect place?

I would like to say how touched I was by the description of Sellars as a “citizen of Earth.” Wouldn’t it be great if the luxury of describing oneself in that way applied to lesser-known artists who are currently trying to produce their work?

Unfortunately, in the process of seeking funding support, we are held accountable to break down ourselves, the audiences we serve and the artists we employ into special constituencies and ethnic categories.
