Latino Artists Create ‘Vision of Our Culture’

Share

Ted Phillips, chairman of the graphic arts department at Moorpark College, asked 16 Latino art students at Moorpark and Oxnard colleges to design graphic works reflecting their culture. The result, he said, far surpassed his expectations.

“This is really above junior college level. I think it’s university-level quality,” Phillips said.

The students’ work is part of an exhibit, “Vision of Our Culture,” which is on display at the Oxnard Public Library through May 27.

A reception for the artists will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the library, 251 S. A St.

The students composed most of the works on computer, manipulating images and adding typography.

“Every artist developed their own statement about what their culture means to them,” Phillips said.

The exhibit also demonstrates the process of designing and printing a work of graphic art, from computer design to the plates used to print copies of the work.

Exhibiting from Moorpark College are Rafael Bautista, Claudia Botany, Luis Gomez, Trevor Hernandez, Elba Katus, Oscar Negret, Frank Peralta and Jesus Rangel.

Oxnard College students represented are Leo Chavez, Cece DeBone, Chris Fujardo, Luis Gomez, Evangelina Noyola, Maria Perez, Juan Solorzano and Victor Torres.
