The New York Yankees, who let a 6-0 lead slip away for the second consecutive game, survived this time when pinch-hitter Matt Nokes hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning at Detroit to beat the Tigers, 10-8, Saturday.

The Yankees ended a three-game losing streak, but didn’t end the woes of Jim Abbott, who could not hold onto the six-run lead after getting only 13 runs of support in his previous six starts.

The Yankees scored six runs in the first inning before Tom Bolton could retire a batter. But by the end of the fourth, the Tigers had tied it at 7-7 and Abbott was gone.

Alan Trammell hit a three-run homer in the second and Skeeter Barnes hit a solo shot off Scott Kamieniecki in the fifth that gave the Tigers their first lead, 8-7.

Danny Tartabull tied the score, 8-8, in the ninth inning with his fifth home run of the season on the first pitch from Mike Henneman.

Nokes’ homer made a winner of Steve Farr (1-1), the Yankees’ fifth pitcher. Dave Johnson (1-1) was the loser.

With two out in the 11th, Paul O’Neill singled and Nokes, batting for Mike Stanley, hit the first pitch into the right-field stands for his second homer of the season and fourth lifetime against his former team.

“This win was good for our confidence,” Tartabull said. “It’s very important to win this ballgame. And that’s not just because Detroit’s in first place and in our division. This game was important to us in other ways, too.”

Before the game, Yankee reliever Steve Howe slipped on the dugout steps and sprained his left ankle. X-rays were negative, but he is expected to miss one to two weeks.

Chicago 10, Cleveland 7--Bo Jackson broke a tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning at Chicago, helping the White Sox beat the Indians.

George Bell hit a homer and drove in four runs as the White Sox won their third consecutive game and ninth in their last 11. Frank Thomas and Ellis Burks also homered for Chicago.

With the score, 6-6, Jackson hit his home run to right field off reliever Cliff Young (0-1).

After Jackson’s homer in the fifth, Chicago added three runs on Joey Cora’s run-scoring single and a two-run single by Bell.

The Indians, who got home runs from Carlos Martinez and Paul Sorrento, had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead.

Jack McDowell (6-1) became the major league’s first six-game winner. He gave up seven runs on eight hits in six innings. Roberto Hernandez, Chicago’s fourth pitcher, pitched the ninth to earn his sixth save.

Seattle 7, Minnesota 2--The Mariners hit four home runs, including two by Jay Buhner, and Erik Hanson remained unbeaten as the Mariners won at Seattle.

The Mariners have hit nine home runs over their past three games.

Though his record improved to 5-0, Hanson’s scoreless streak came to an end at 22 1/3 innings. A first-inning solo homer by Kirby Puckett, his sixth of the season, ended Hanson’s streak, the third-longest in Mariner history.

Seattle scored four runs against Twin starter Jim Deshaies (4-3) in the second inning, including consecutive one-out home runs by Bill Haselman and Tino Martinez.

Milwaukee 6, Boston 3--Cal Eldred bounced back from two shaky outings for his fourth victory to lead the Brewers at Milwaukee.

Eldred (4-3), who had given up nine earned runs in a combined 7 1/3 innings in his two previous starts, shut out the Red Sox for six innings on five hits. He pitched seven-plus innings and gave up three runs on nine hits.

Doug Henry got the final three outs for his sixth save.

The Brewers, shut out, 1-0, on three hits Friday night, gave Eldred a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Boston’s Paul Quantrill (2-1), making his first major league start because of Frank Viola’s sprained ankle, made a wild throw on leadoff hitter Pat Listach’s bunt. Listach reached second on the play and scored on Billy Spiers’ single. Vaughn and Tom Brunansky singled for another run and B.J. Surhoff had a run-scoring grounder to drive in another.

Baltimore 6, Toronto 3--Damon Buford’s two-run double sparked a five-run fifth inning at Toronto to lift the Orioles.

Rookie Doug Linton (0-1) walked Sherman Obando to start the fifth. Tim Hulett followed with a single and Harold Reynolds walked to load the bases.

Buford hit his two-run double, but Reynolds was thrown out at the plate.

After Brady Anderson walked, Mark McLemore hit a two-run triple. Cal Ripken followed with a run-scoring double for the fifth run of the inning.

Rick Sutcliffe (3-2) pitched six innings for his first victory since April 16.
