Smith Edges Mitchell in 100 Meters at Japan Meet

Former world record-holder Calvin Smith beat fellow American Dennis Mitchell by 0.01 seconds in the 100-meter dash at the Mito International track and field meet in Japan on Sunday.

Smith was timed in 10.54 seconds and 1992 Olympic bronze medalist Mitchell ran 10.55.

In other events:

Randy Barnes of the United States won the shotput at 66 feet 7 3/4 inches. Japan’s Takahisa Yoshida won the high jump at 7-7, a Japanese record. American Hollis Conway finished second at 7-5 3/4. Yoshito Kondo of Japan won the 800 meters in 1:50.72, beating American Terril Davis (1:51.24).

Chryste Gaines won her second 100-meter race in four days, in 11.92, and China’s Huang Zhihong, the 1991 world champion, won the shot put at 64-3.
