Reliever Joe Grahe has a slight protrusion of a vertebrae in his neck, according to the results of a magnetic resonance imaging test.

The injury is not believed to be serious, although it will occasionally pinch the nerve and cause pain.

Third baseman Kelly Gruber, who has been recovering from rotator cuff surgery, said he will begin his rehabilitation assignment in about a week. He is expected to be assigned to double-A Midland, Tex., remaining there about three weeks. He is not eligible to be activated until June 5.

Oakland Manager Tony La Russa still was perturbed Sunday about Angel Manager Buck Rodgers’ request to examine Athletic starter Bob Welch’s glove Saturday for an illegal substance.

“It shows me, ‘You got one coming next,’ ” La Russa said. “Maybe I could challenge (J.T.) Snow for bringing up a corked bat.”
