High-Mileage Car Pushed: The Clinton Administration is dangling $1 billion in front of Detroit’s Big Three auto makers to work with the government in developing a car during the next decade that would get 60 to 90 miles per gallon of fuel, Automotive News reports. General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. have countered by saying they could develop a 40 m.p.g. car, says the trade publication. Elliott Hall, Ford’s vice president for public affairs in Washington, told the publication that “we want to see what the research says first.” Early discussions concern hybrid vehicles using natural gas and electric vehicle technology.
