Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : 3 Killed in Antelope Valley Freeway Crash

Three people were killed, including a 2-month-old baby, and two other children were injured Sunday night when a car slammed into a guardrail on the Antelope Valley Freeway, north of Agua Dulce Canyon Road.

The car was traveling more than 80 m.p.h. when it drifted onto the left shoulder and into the center divider, according to witnesses.

The car then crossed the southbound lanes of traffic and struck the right shoulder’s guardrail, rolling at least once before coming to rest right-side up, said John Manduca of the California Highway Patrol.

The male driver, believed to be 30, was killed immediately as was the 25-year-old female passenger and the male baby who was sitting on her lap, authorities said. Two boys, sitting in the back seat, suffered broken bones.

All of the occupants, except for the driver, were ejected. An unused child safety seat was also propelled from the car.

Advocates of seat belts and child safety seats say the accident would have been much less severe if restraint devices were used.

Both children were transported by helicopter to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, where they were listed in fair condition.

The younger boy, about 3, had fractured ribs and bruises and was initially admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The older boy, about 6, had a broken leg and bruises.

Identities of the victims were unavailable pending notification of relatives.

The accident occurred about 11:20 p.m.
