Detroit Mercy’s Byrdsong Is New Northwestern Coach

Ricky Byrdsong, who revived the basketball program at Detroit Mercy--formerly the University of Detroit--became coach at Northwestern on Monday.
Byrdsong, 37, replaces Bill Foster, who resigned to become interim athletic director.
Detroit was 7-23 the season before Byrdsong took over in 1988. The Titans improved each year and went 15-12 last season, their best record since 1984. Overall, Detroit Mercy was 53-87 under Byrdsong.
