SIMI VALLEY : County to Seek Grant for Recycling Program
Ventura County supervisors voted Tuesday to seek a $12,845 state grant to buy recycling containers for residents of the rural Santa Susana Knolls community southwest of Simi Valley.
If the California Department of Conservation grant is obtained, the county will give each of the community’s 400 households two containers for recyclable items, said David Goldstein, an analyst with the county’s Solid Waste Management Department.
Residents will place newspapers and cardboard in one container, and other recyclables--including beverage containers, cans and plastic goods--in the other.
Santa Susana Knolls residents will be able to dump these materials in larger bins that the area’s waste hauler, GI Rubbish, has agreed to place in a central location, Goldstein said.
County Supervisor Vicky Howard, who represents the area, endorsed the grant application, saying that curbside recycling, which is employed elsewhere in the county, is impractical on the narrow roads in the rugged Santa Susana area.
Because a curbside program cannot be set up, the Santa Susana Knolls Homeowners Assn. is supporting a drop-off recycling program using household containers and the large centrally located bins.
