LA HABRA : 6 Juveniles Held in Shooting of 2 Men

Police arrested six La Habra juveniles suspected of shooting and wounding two men during a late-night confrontation, police said Tuesday.

Jim Aguirre, 24, of Corona and Roberto Gonzalez, 25, of La Habra were on the sidewalk in the 400 block of North Walnut Street when a group of about eight juveniles approached about 9:30 p.m. Monday, police said. The two men spoke briefly with the group before some of the youths opened fire, police said.

“We don’t know what was said,” Lt. Wayne Lowry said. “There was some kind of conversation going on, and the next thing you know someone pulled a gun and start shooting.” Lowry said police are trying to determine if the shooting was gang-related.

After the shooting, the juveniles fled into a nearby apartment complex in the 500 block of West Greenwood Avenue. Police found the alleged assailants after neighbors pointed out which direction the juveniles ran, Lowry said.

Lowry said Aguirre and Gonzales were visiting the area and were not sure why the men were attacked. Police, who declined to name the hospitals where the men were being treated, said both victims were in good condition Tuesday.

Police said they believe that there are two shooting suspects still at large. The six juveniles who were arrested, ages 11 to 17, were taken to Juvenile Hall in Orange, where they were booked on suspicion of attempted murder, Lowry said.
