In this space, it is the tradition to present noteworthy events that might otherwise be overlooked.

It is not likely anyone is going to overlook this weekend’s Glenfest ’93. Anything that closes four city blocks in the heart of downtown Glendale from Friday to Sunday is going to stir a ripple or two.

On the other hand, it just does not feel right to ignore what could be the mother of all parties in favor of, say a small, radical, but fascinating performance art group in Highland Park (see “Raspucho,” under Theater in the Calendar of Events).

And Glenfest promises to be a major blowout. There will be four stages of free entertainment featuring comedy and just about every type of popular music out there, such as jazz, presented by JAX Bar and Grill, featuring Med Flory and Lanny Morgan and their group Supersax, on Saturday evening.

The Exchange complex will be transformed into a children’s fair, with game booths, a mural space to encourage young artists and a petting zoo.

More than 40 Southern California restaurants will be serving sample dishes at $1 to $3 a pop.

There will be beer and wine stations, merchant booths, arts and crafts booths, strolling performers, cultural displays and ice cream carts.

Entertainers such as Sergio Mendez, Richard Elliot, Jose Feliciano and The Party will perform on different stages.

The four city blocks are on Brand Boulevard from Broadway to California Avenue, and Wilson Avenue between Orange Street and Maryland Avenue. Hours are 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

One-day passes are $5, or $3 for children younger than 12. A three-day pass is $20 and includes admission and $15 worth of food and beverage scrip. Tickets for the big amphitheater concerts are $20 each and include admission to the festival.
