Mary L. Lenihan has been named executive...

Mary L. Lenihan has been named executive director of the Palos Verdes Art Center, a nonprofit community arts organization which has served the South Bay for 61 years. Lenihan, a Hermosa Beach resident, succeeds Vincent Beggs, who left last July to become executive director of the Los Angeles Children’s Museum. She is completing studies at USC for a master’s degree in art history and museum studies. Her three years of museum experience include stints at USC’s Fisher Gallery, the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Two Redondo Union High School English teachers, Georgie Ann Kelm and David Lemire, have received grants from the National Endowment of the Humanities and the U.S. Department of Education to attend summer seminars.

Kelm will spend the month of July at the University of Philadelphia studying Virgil’s “Aeneid” and the Augustan Age. These studies will provide enrichment and background for the honors-level sophomore English classes she teaches.

Lemire will spend six weeks at USC attending a seminar on political economy. The course will include discussion of the philosophies of Adam Smith and Karl Marx, among others.

The San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has announced that Dr. Eugene De Angelis is the new honorary mayor of San Pedro. His selection was determined by the amount of funds he raised for local charities. De Angelis was sponsored by the San Pedro Elks Club and his campaign committee brought in more than $17,000. Also running for the two-year term was Officer Donald Jenks of the Los Angeles Police Department, sponsored by Beacon House and Neighborhood Watch. Jenks brought in close to $9,000. Gojko Spralja, who was running for reelection, brought in more than $10,000. He was sponsored by the San Pedro Lion’s Club and Dalmation-American Club of San Pedro.

Vickie Bennett is the new director of volunteers for the Hermosa Beach Historical Society, according to president Regina Taylor. Bennett takes over the position from Patricia Gazin. Volunteers staff the city’s historical museum. It is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday at the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach. Freda and Myer Badnin) are recipients of a 1993 National Community Service Award from the American Assn. of Retired Persons (AARP). Members of Torrance Chapter 1878, the Badnins were selected by the chapter’s Board of Directors for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the community.

San Pedro cardiologist Bruce N. Goldreyer, M.D., has received sub-specialty certification for clinical cardiac electrophysiology from the American Board of Internal Medicine. This is the first year that the board has certified physicians in the new category, the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms. Goldreyer is on staff at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital and was chief of the medical staff there in 1989-90.

Three South Bay residents have been named officers of Drum Barracks Civil War Museum’s Drum Barracks Garrison, a volunteer group at the Wilmington museum. They are Rich Rollins of Torrance, Jim Strong of Redondo Beach, and Elaine Shallenberger of Rancho Palos Verdes.
