LOS ANGELES : 4 Prominent Democrats Weigh In on Council Race

Share

Four prominent Democrats have jumped into the 15th District council race, to endorse two Republicans, splitting their support between incumbent Joan Milke Flores and her challenger, businessman Rudy Svorinich.

Councilwoman Gloria Molina and County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke are supporting Flores for what would be her fourth term, while Rep. Jane Harman of the 36th District and Rep. Maxine Waters of the 35th District have sided with Svorinich.

Although the race in the 15th District, which stretches from Watts to San Pedro, is a nonpartisan one, the liberal Democrats’ endorsements of Svorinich, a moderate Republican, and Flores, who is more conservative, are strategically significant.

Svorinich is working hard to portray Flores as an ultraconservative representative marching out of step with a politically moderate district. Flores is touting her 12 years in office and telling voters that regardless of their political leanings, the city government is in too great a state of upheaval to be turned over to a man with no council experience.
